One of the factors that help determine the freight rate is the shipment’s density. The total weight of the shipment is divided by the total cubic feet to determine the density of the freight.
Freight Density = 4.69
ALWAYS CALCULATE DENSITY AS IT SHIPS, meaning if loose, use dims/weight of cartons; if on a pallet* dims/weight of pallet; if a crate, dims/weight of crate.
ALWAYS USE THE OUTER DIMS OF PALLET, NOT THE DIMS OF FREIGHT AS IT SITS ON PALLET
Example: 4 cartons (12x12x12) on a 48×48 pallet will occupy a 24×24 square, but you use the 48×48 as length and width. Height would be height of cartons stacked and the pallet itself. This would be 18”.
